Neil Patrick Harris and his family battled coronavirus

Neil Patrick Harris has described the ‘not pleasant’ experience of him and his family contracting coronavirus.

The actor, his husband David Burtka and their nine-year-old twins Gideon and Harper battled the virus early on in the health crisis.

The 47-year-old first realised something was wrong when he lost his sense of taste and smell.

He told Today: ‘It happened very early [in the pandemic], like late March, early April.

‘We were doing our best before, and I thought I had the flu, and I didn’t want to be paranoid about it. And then I lost my sense of taste and smell, which was a big indicator, so we holed up.’

The How I Met Your Mother star and his family have recovered, but added: ‘It was not pleasant, but we got through it.’

He went on to urge people take every measure possible to ‘slow down’ the pandemic.

‘We want to make sure everyone’s doing their best to slow this down every way possible, for sure,’ Neil, who wed David in 2014, said.

In the UK, a loss of or change to your sense of taste and smell is listed as one of the main symptoms of coronavirus.

Neil is not the only famous face to have shared their experience with the virus.

Actor Dwayne Johnson revealed that he and his wife Lauren Hashian and their daughters Tiana, two, and four-year-old Jasmine battled coronavirus, but ’emerged’ on the other side of it and are ‘no longer contagious’.

The wrestler explained in an Instagram video: ‘My number one priority is to always protect my family and my loved ones… I wish it was only me that tested positive. It was my entire family and it was a kick in the gut.

‘But I am happy to tell you guys that we as a family are good. We are on the other end of it, we are on the other side. We are no longer contagious and we are — thank God — we are healthy.’

Tom Hanks, Idris Elba, Daniel Dae Kim and Olga Kurylenko have also all had the virus.
