Martin Kemp and his wife Shirlie married in 1988, meaning the sweet couple, who are the parents of radio and TV star Roman Kemp, have been man and wife for over 30 years.

When asked what the magic recipe is for a marriage that spans decades, Martin told OK! Online that, quite simply, friendship is key.

"Shirlie and I met each other very young, and the key to a long lasting relationship really is true friendship. Shirlie really is my best friend," the 59 year old explained.

Martin continued to sweetly tell us that spending any time with his wife Shirlie is "like a date night," when asked what they do to keep the spark alive.

Spandau Ballet star Martin said of their date nights: "We do date nights without even thinking about it – we love enjoying each other’s time over a takeaway on a Friday night in, or going to the cinema.

"We like to keep it simple and spending any time with Shirlie is like date night!"

The star detailed that the most romantic thing he'd done for Shirlie occurred on their 35th wedding anniversary.

As it was the year of the pearl, the TV star surprised his other half with an "amazing gift."

Martin explained: "You may not know this but Shirlie is a huge Doris Day fan, so as a surprise I got her some pearls that Doris Day owned which was a pretty special present."

Despite spending a lot of time together during lockdown, Martin coined himself as "lucky" to have had his wife by his side during it.

"The third lockdown last winter was really tough but we got through it and Shirlie and I had each other. We were very lucky to be able to spend more time together," the star added.

Now, Martin, who presents Sunday Best alongside his son Roman, is whisking Shirlie off with P&O Ferries to enjoy some time in Lille.

It's the couple's first European adventure since Covid and, like many attempting a getaway, the loved-up pair have opted for somewhere overseas.

Discussing the trip, Martin told OK! Online: "This is the first time I’ve been away in two years, I’ve always loved travelling and it’s something we really missed during lockdown. When Shirlie and I got the opportunity to go on a mid-week break to France with P&O Ferries, we jumped at the opportunity.

"It was so quick and easy to get over to Lille on the ferry and this is the first time we’ve been, so we had a really lovely time.

"This was the first time we visited Lille so we spent our days sightseeing, shopping, and enjoying a drink in a café or bar in the sunshine. It was true bliss and great to enjoy the last of the summer sun!"
