BBC series Luther will be returning to screens it has been announced – but this time in the format of a film.

Netflix UK confirmed the news that Idris Elba will be back to reprise the role of iconic London detective, DCI John Luther, and will be joined by actors Cynthia Erivo and Andy Serkis, with filming beginning in November of this year.

Fans of the hit show, which began in 2010 and has extended to five series, will no doubt be pleased to see more of Luther since it last aired back in early 2019.

This is a dream come true for Idris, who stated in July 2020 that he had ultimately intended for Luther to evolve from a series into a film – with possible sequels.

“I’ve made it very clear that I’d like to see ‘Luther’ come back as a film and I can tell you this, that we are this close…” the 49-year-old told Sky News.

Attending the 2020 Bafta Awards, Idris continued to push the prospects of a Luther film forward, determined to see it happen.

"I've maintained that I'd like to see [Luther] come to a film," he said.

"That's what I think we're headed towards, is a film. I'm looking forward to making that happen… It is happening! With film, the sky is the limit.

You can be a little bit more bold with the storylines, and a little bit more international, and a little more up the scale. But John Luther is always going to be John Luther.”

Along with exciting news of a Luther film, it has also been announced that director of the critically acclaimed fifth series, Jamie Payne, and writer, Neil Cross, will be returning alongside Idris to helm the project.

"…Neil is beavering away on writing this thing, and I think the remit for the film is to scale it up,” said Idris before the announcement. “It will be more murder, more Volvos, more frowning Luther… essentially we just want to try to take it to a much bigger audience and scale, and perhaps international as well."

The film will see Luther face a “double threat” with Cynthia playing his detective nemesis and Andy adopting the role of the main villain.

News has been kept under wraps as to whether actress Ruth Wilson will return as popular character Alice – fans of the show will have to wait further for confirmation of this.
