Former Strictly Come Dancing professional Kevin Clifton, 38, has revealed a photo his girlfriend Stacey Dooley, 34, took of him while he was relaxing on the couch urged him to make a change after taking a break from his busy work schedule. The dancer had quit the BBC show before the coronavirus pandemic hit and was set to begin his starring role in Strictly Ballroom.

However, the COVID-19 outbreak then suddenly shut down theatres across the UK, leading Kevin to take “an enforced break” from his busy career.

Although the star enjoyed taking the opportunity to rest at the beginning of the first national lockdown, he decided he needed to transform his lifestyle after he spotted a likeness between himself and notoriously lazy cartoon character Homer Simpson in a snap taken by the documentary filmmaker.

Speaking out on his transformation after seeing the unflattering picture of himself, Kevin recalled on his self-titled podcast: “I’ve been very fortunate in my career that I’ve gone from project to project.

“I’ve worked, and worked, and worked, I’ve only had a few periods where I’ve not been working and I tend to take on a lot because I like it.

“It’s my passion and I like working and I go from Strictly Come Dancing to another show, to maybe my own tour, to then another show and then some Strictly gigs, then back on to Strictly Come Dancing.

“So I decided as soon as this hit that I personally would take a two month break.”

Reflecting on his plans at the time, Kevin added on The Kevin Clifton Show: “I was like, ‘I’m not going to worry about anything, I’m not going to think about working too much, I’m not going to think about what I’m eating, all of that. I’m just going to enjoy myself and take a holiday because I never have one’.

“So I did that, and I think that was quite good for me for those first two months because it’s just something that I personally needed.

“Obviously you wish it was different circumstances, but it was an enforced break.”

Unfortunately, Kevin later realised he had experienced too much of a good thing with his new relaxed outlook on life in lockdown.

He laughed and admitted: “At the end of those two months, Stacey’s got a picture of me on the couch where I literally look like Homer Simpson!

“And I was like okay, I have to get moving again.

“So I started running and started getting myself fit again and then I started feeling that creative itch, like I need to do something, I need to do something creative.”

Luckily, Kevin found a new way to keep himself busy in lockdown with the help of Stacey, as she assisted him in rehearsing for auditions.

The dancer divulged in a previous episode of his podcast that the investigative journalist wanted to help him get into character by rehearsing lines with him in an American accent.

Kevin explained: “She’s so brilliant she’s almost like wanting to act and get involved in it, even though she’s off camera.

“I’d be like, ‘Right, I need you to read these lines’ and she’s like, ‘Okay, I’ll do my American accent.’

“I’m like, ‘No, you don’t have to do that, just do it in your accent and I’ll do my bit.'”

Kevin revealed that his girlfriend went ahead with the gimmick.

Stacey said: “‘Oh, anyway I’ll do it,’ and it’s not quite right her American accent, so she’s making me laugh as we’re doing it.”
