Katherine Ryan on ‘rift’ in her marriage during lockdown as she and husband Bobby caught Covid

Katherine Ryan has revealed her and husband Bobby Kootstra suffered a "brief rift" in their marriage during lockdown as he discovered they had lost their sense of smell.

The 38 year old comedian and Bobby dated in high school, rekindling their romance 20 years later and entered into a civil partnership in 2019.

But Katherine joked they almost hit the rocks during lockdown after contracting coronavirus as she opened up on losing their sense of smell to OK!.

She said: "It caused a brief rift in my marriage. There were themes of mistrust because my husband was the first one who noticed.

"I was still eating food, tasting food and my husband said to me, ‘You know when I cooked dinner, we’ve lost our smell because I couldn’t smell the garlic,’ and I said, ‘No, you’re wrong, you’re lying, you can smell, you’re an idiot.'

"To prove him wrong, I went around the house gathering different things which I knew had strong smells.

"I gathered candles and some shampoos and some essences and I couldn’t smell any of them as I was trying to find something to prove him wrong. That’s when I realised I couldn’t smell anything."

She added: "Now I really appreciate those little things that maybe a lot of us took for granted.

"I definitely, definitely should have cherished my sense of smell more," she continued, revealing it has still only partially returned.

Katherine is now helping to retrain the senses of those who, like her, lost their sense of smell due to Covid by partnering with meal kit delivery service Gousto and smell disorder charity AbScent to launch their flavour training kits.

She also opened up on the heartbreaking two miscarriages she went through before welcoming son Fred last June.

"By the time Fred joined our family I felt very lucky because we had lost two pregnancies before him," she said.

"But I also have been pregnant for 18 months so I joke that I had the gestation of an elephant. It just felt relentless to me."

Katherine has teamed up with recipe box Gousto to launch limited-edition 'Flavour Saviour' kits, designed with AbScent to help re-train lost sense of smell and bring back the joy of flavour. Visit flavour-saviour.co.uk from March 14 to order a free kit.
