Kate Garraway told by doctors that husband Derek could be locked in coma forever

Kate Garraway has been told that her husband Derek Draper may be locked in a coma forever, following his battle with Covid-19.

The Good Morning Britain journalist’s husband of 15 years was rushed to hospital on 30 March while struggling to breathe, and after being diagnosed with coronavirus, he was placed in an induced coma in April to give his lungs a break.

However, doctors have since been able to carry out an MRI scan which has shown all the damage the virus inflicted on Derek, 52, and they have warned Kate that he may never recover.

Speaking about a devastating phone call from the intensive care unit two weeks ago, Garraway explained that she was asked by a senior doctor what her greatest fear was.

The 53-year-old told The Sun: ‘I said, “Derek dying” and he replied, “Well, now I think I have to give you a second worst case scenario, which is that he never changes from this. That he is locked in this for ever”.

‘He said, “I’m not telling you this to scare you. It’s because we don’t know if he can recover. We’ll only know over the coming weeks and months”.’

Kate said that she threw up following the heartbreaking phone call.

‘It’s like a second level of loss. We may lose him even if we don’t lose him.

‘If he doesn’t wake up, then he’s sort of lost anyway . . . not that I’d love him any less or ever give up. I’d fly all over the world to find a cure if there was one, but all this is unprecedented.’

Kate explained that Derek – who is now Covid-free – has had a tracheotomy to help him breathe, and his lungs are showing some sign of recovery despite having clots.

However, the virus has ravaged his body, making him ‘very, very diabetic’, giving him holes in his heart, nerve damage, liver damage and kidney damage which led to him being out on kidney dialysis.

Kate and her kids have been unable to visit Derek due to the coronavirus pandemic restrictions, but speak to him over FaceTime.

Kate, who has two children with Derek, 14-year-old Darcey and 10-year-old Billy, opened up on her husband’s condition in an emotional interview on Friday’s edition of GMB.

Speaking to Ben Shepherd and Ranvir Singh, the I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! campmate said: ‘He’s very, very sick. And as time goes on… It’s a virus, it’s like a computer virus I think.

‘The doctors manage one bit extraordinarily well and there seems to be a flicker of hope, and then other things emerge and they’re fighting that. It’s affected him from the top of his head to the tip of his toes.

‘He’s now Covid-free so he’s testing negative for the Covid virus. The fight with the virus has been won and he’s still here. But it’s wreaked extraordinary damage on his body and we don’t know if he can recover from that.’

She also got emotional as she discussed the final call she had with her husband before he went into a coma.

Kate said: ‘‘He said, “You saved my life. I don’t just mean now, I mean everything, being married to you, the children… you saved my life.” And then I said I love you, and the doctor said he’s under. And that was it, that’s the last time I spoke to him.’
