Peter Willis was the founder of The Daily Mirror’s Pride Of Britain Awards, an annual night of recognition for the UK’s unsung heroes. Kate Garraway, 54, said she will miss her “good friend” who she described as “an incredibly kind man”.

The Good Morning Britain presenter shared a picture of the late journalist on her Instagram page, in view of her one million followers.

She commented: ”I’m devastated to hear of Peter’s passing.

“He was a brilliant editor and his work for Pride of Britain was groundbreaking, tireless and embodied the essence of his spirit – to look for the good everyday and find healthy fun in the darkest of situations.

“I have never met anyone who wasn’t happier for being in his company.

Kate’s emotional post comes as her husband Derek continues his recovery following a year-long health battle.

The 53-year-old former lobbyist was hospitalised with coronavirus in March 2020.

He was placed into an induced coma as his blood oxygen levels severely dropped.

Derek went on to suffer from further health complications such as holes in his lungs and several infections.

He returned to his family home in April under the care of professional medical staff.

In her book The  Power Of Hope, Kate revealed what a neurologist had told her about his progress.

She wrote: “[He said] I think it’s fair to say if he is still like this after two years we will know there is very little chance of him making any meaningful recovery’.”

Kate added she had also made changes to their home to make it more accessible for her spouse.

The couple, who married in 2005, share two children together; Darcey, 15, and 11-year-old son Billy.
