Jon Hamm Had to Follow Intense Royal Rules While Meeting Prince William and Kate Middleton
Prince William and Kate Middleton recently stepped out for a super glam evening at the London premiere of Top Gun: Maverick, and naturally chilled with a ton of celebrities while they were there. Including Jon Hamm, who revealed that meeting the royals was, predictably, kinda intense and came with a lot of dos and donts.
Apparently the cast were literally given rules that they were meant to follow upon meeting William and Kate. “It’s a little anxiety-producing because they give you these rules that you’re meant to sort of follow,” he said on Live with Kelly and Ryan (via People). “You’re meant to say, ‘Your Royal Highness’ — if they offer their name, then you can use their name, but you can’t do it first. And you can’t offer your hand, they have to offer their hand. Then you have to bow, but you can’t bow too low.”
Jon also noted that his costar Miles Teller “geeked out” over Prince William’s eyes, saying “They’re so blue. I got lost in his eyes,” while Jon joked “I didn’t think we were allowed to look him in the eye.”
Ironically, William and Kate are said to be trying to modernize the whole formal meet-and-greet aspect of the monarchy due to backlash over their extremely questionable and controversy-filled tour of the Caribbean, with a source telling the Sunday Mirror,”The general consensus was that the tour seemed out of date, out of touch, too formal and stuffy. So now it’s more ‘Wills and Kate’ instead of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge…‘Just call me Wills’ type of thing. They want to try to avoid the bows and curtsies in public, be more approachable, less formal, less stuffy, and break away with a lot of the tradition and focus on a modern monarchy.”
Guess they decided not to start this new era at the Top Gun premiere?
