Happy Valley fans predict how final showdown between Catherine Cawood and Tommy Lee Royce will end as they point out unusual plot details

Viewers have seen Catherine Cawood’s hatred for Tommy Lee Royce simmer over three series.

And as the final episode of Happy Valley draws near, fans have predicted the ultimate showdown between Sarah Lancashire’s Sergeant Cawood and James Norton’s Tommy.

Episode four of the hit BBC series aired on Sunday night and saw Tommy make a daring escape at his court hearing.

Finale: Catherine Cawood’s hatred for Tommy Lee Royce has simmered over three series and as the final episode of Happy Valley draws near, fans have predicted the ultimate showdown

Tommy headed to court over a gangland murder charge, the victim of which was discovered by Sergeant Cawood in the opening scene of the series.

After two of the Kneževićs men provided a distraction outside, Tommy fought his way out of the courtroom, cycling off into Leeds in the closing scene of the episode.

Tommy’s escape signals that a final showdown between him and Cawood is building, but with it being the final series some viewers are beginning to worry that Sarah Lancashire’s lead won’t make it to the retirement she has been counting down to.

‘If bad things happen to Catherine at the end of this series I’m not sure I will be able to forgive Sally Wainwright and co.’ tweeted author JoJo Moyes.

Another viewer predicted a ‘Thelma and Louise’ style ending for the enemies, tweeting: ‘Catherine will take Tommy out, with the perfect Thelma and Louise ending.’

‘Catherine or Tommy are going to die, aren’t they?’ asked another.

One viewer recalled the odd inclusion of a scene in the latest episode which showed Catherine’s colleague Joyce revealing how she’d collected £2,000 for her boss’ retirement whip round.

‘#Happyvalley Calling it now.. That retirement collection pot will be used at her funeral. Her and Tommy both getting killed off in the last episode,’ the viewer decided.

Another fan singled out another scene in episode four, suggesting that Catherine’s beloved Land Rover, bought for her retirement trip, could have a part to play.

‘Please let Catherine run Tommy Lee Royce over in the landrover, with Alison’s newly installed alternator, on the way to the ferry taking her on her retirement travels. That’s the happy ending to #HappyValley we all want. #saveCatherineCawood’

Happy Valley continues on Sunday at 9pm on BBC One.
