Emma Roberts Drops Out Of Netflix's 'Spinning Out'

Less than a month after Emma Roberts was announced as the star of Spinning Out, the actress is taking off her skates and stepping off the ice. Roberts, who stars in FX’s American Horror Story: Apocalypse alongside her former Scream Queens co-star Billie Lourd, has stepped back to focus on other projects.

Roberts was set to play Kat Baker, a high-level single skater who takes a terrible, career-ending tumble on the ice and loses her competition status. Luckily, Kat finds a way to continue following her dreams by teaming up with a talented bad boy. While she risks exposing a secret that could unravel her life, Kat and her new partner face impossible odds. They tackle injury, financial problems, and mental breakdowns on the way to achieving their Olympic dreams.

According to Deadline, Roberts has a scheduling conflict with an unnamed project, which required her to drop out. Since American Horror Story Season 8 is almost finished and Season 9 filming won’t begin for some time, we can rule that out.

Netflix is reportedly moving ahead with the series without Roberts, and though reps for the streaming giant declined to comment, rumor is that Lily Collins (The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones and Love, Rosie) is in talks for the lead role. Now that’s someone we could see stepping into Kat Baker’s skates. Casting for Kat’s bad boy counterpart is also underway, so it looks like the show will be on the ice (no pun intended) for the foreseeable future.

TBH, this project seemed like quite a turn for Roberts. She’s best known for her role as the manipulative Madison Montgomery on American Horror Story and the somehow even more awful Chanel Oberlin on Fox’s departed Scream Queens, which ended after only two short seasons.

Roberts shines when she plays the mean girl. We’ll always be bitter that Scream Queens didn’t get credit for being such a groundbreaking, fierce, comedic satirical series.

On American Horror Story, Madison is proving instrumental in the efforts against the apocalypse. Roberts can go from comedic to dramatic in a matter of seconds, and it’s possible her talents wouldn’t have been utilized as well on an ice skating drama.

Deadline reports Roberts’ people are keeping quiet about this new project, but it’s said to be another new TV series. This is an exciting turn of events, as we’re huge Roberts fans and Spinning Out didn’t feel like the right show for her.

Long live Chanel Oberlin.
