Kathy Reichs books in order: How do I read Temperance Brennan and Virals series in order?
Bones Hillman performs alongside Midnight Oil in 2002
Kathy Reichs first novel, Déjà Dead, became a New York Times bestseller and saw her become a household name in the crime fiction world. It also marked the beginning of her Temperance Brennan series, which is one of her two best-loved novel collections and became a hit TV series. Express.co.uk breaks down how fans can enjoy her works in the order they were intended.
Many fans will recognise Temperance Brennan from hit TV series Bones, starring former Buffy the Vampire Slayer star David Boreanaz and Emily Deschanel as Bones.
Bones is, of course, the nickname for Temperance Brennan, who is a leading authority in the field of forensic anthropology.
Extra to the huge numbers of novels in the series, there are also short stories, and it can be tricky to work out the best order to enjoy these in.
The Bones Collection is where Kathy’s short stories reside, and include First Bones, Bones in her Pocket, Swamp Bones and Bones on Ice.

To enjoy the stories and novels in order, First Bones is where fans must begin.
After this, novels are best enjoyed in the order they were written, pretty much, starting with Kathy’s first book, Déjà Dead.
Death du Jour comes next, after which Deadly Décisions and Fatal Voyage follow.
Grave Secrets to be read if keeping in order, after which Bare Bones and Monday Mourning follow.
Cross Bones, which is another crime following a murder in which Bones must examine a decomposing corpse, after which Break No Bones comes next, this time looking at ancient remains.
Bones to Ashes is next in the list, after which Devil Bones and 206 Bones follows, with this book being named after the number of bones in a human body.
Spider Bones comes after this, following an order case reopened, after which Flash and Bones focuses on a crime in the speedway community.
Bones are Forever is next in the list, after which another short story from the Bone Collection follows: Bones in her Pocket.
Bones of the Lost comes next after which the third short story, Swamp Bones, should be read, then Bones Never Lie which follows the gruesome tale of two child murders.
The final story from The Bone Collection, Bones on Ice, is next, after which Speaking in Bones and A Conspiracy of Bones follow, which brings up to date with Tempe’s dealings.
Other than the Temperance Brennan stories, Kathy has also written a group of stories called Virals, which are co-written with her song Brendan.
These young adult books focus on Tempe’s great-niece, Tory Brennan, and her life which has far more elements of fantasy, as she and her friends each gain powers because of a virus.
The series begins with the namesake of the series, Virals, which is followed by the second book, Seizure.
Code is next in the series, followed by Exposure and Terminal, and the final book in the series is a collection of short stories, Trace Evidence.
Kathy has also written a number of novellas and a stand alone novel, Two Nights.
Being a forensic anthropologist herself, Kathy has also written academic works, showing how her breadth of experience has aided her writing.
