George RR Martin says isolation is making him FINISH Winds of Winter teasing ‘GRIM’ plot

After months of silence on The Winds of Winter, A Song of Ice and Fire author George RR Martin has finally given an update. The 71-year-old posted on his blog about his various businesses shutting down due to coronavirus. But he also updated on his health and how he’s self-isolating away and actually getting on with writing his new Game of Thrones book.

Martin wrote: “For those of you who may be concerned for me personally… yes, I am aware that I am very much in the most vulnerable population, given my age and physical condition.

“But I feel fine at the moment, and we are taking all sensible precautions.

“I am off by myself in a remote isolated location, attended by one of my staff, and I’m not going into town or seeing anyone.

“Truth be told, I am spending more time in Westeros than in the real world, writing every day.”

Of The Winds of Winter’s plot, the author added: “Things are pretty grim in the Seven Kingdoms.

“But maybe not as grim as they may become here.”

If anything, self-isolating due to the pandemic may actually force Martin to finally finish The Winds of Winter.

It’s been nine years since the last book in A Song of Ice and Fire was published and since then the Game of Thrones TV show has started and finished.

In the past, the author has admitted how he can only get on and write The Winds of Winter when he has a whole day set aside to do so.

So if he has other commitments away from his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico (from TV producing to fan appearances and his various businesses) he will not write a single word apart from maybe updating his blog or using social media.

But now Martin is in a situation where all he can do for the next few weeks or maybe months, as an older person taking precaution, is get on with finishing the book.

If anything, maybe he will meet his personal deadline of by the end of July before he attends WorldCon in New Zealand.

But, of course, with the global pandemic shutting down the world in many respects, any hope of publication in the near future could well be postponed.

Meanwhile, in the same blog post, Martin admitted that coronavirus made him feel like he was living in a science fiction novel.

The 71-year-old wrote: “Some days, watching the news, I cannot help feeling as if we are all now living in a science fiction novel.

“But not, alas, the sort of science fiction novel that I dreamed of living in when I was a kid, the one with the cities on the Moon, colonies on Mars, household robots programmed with the Three Laws, and flying cars.”

Martin added: “ I never liked the pandemic stories half so well…

“Let us hope we all come through this safe and sound.

“Stay well, my friends.  Better to be safe than sorry.”

Of his current mood, he updated: “Stressed.”
