Why ‘American Idol’ Judge Katy Perry Has Never Won a Grammy

Katy Perry – currently rocking the American Idol judges’ panel – is widely known for her mega-hits Roar, I Kissed a Girl, Dark Horse, and Firework. However, despite a loyal fan following and several sold-out concerts, the pop icon has yet to take home the most coveted prize in the music industry: the Grammy.

Though she has never won a Grammy Award, Katy Perry has been nominated 13 times. Most often nominated in the Pop Vocal Album and Pop Solo Performance categories, Firework, Teenage Dream, and Roar have earned the recording artist her most nominations (two for each).

Roar has sold over six million copies in the US alone and was number one on the Billboard’s Top 100 for two weeks in a row. However, Perry cannot seem to snag a Grammy. So, is the artist doing something wrong? Is she not satisfying the Grammy Awards’ Academy? There are a few possible reasons Katy Perry has yet to receive the prestigious honor.

Katy Perry’s #1 competition: Adele

Most years, Katy Perry goes head-to-head with some of the most accomplished names in the music industry. It’s not to say that Katy Perry can’t compete; however, when Adele puts out an album, she usually dominates the Grammys.

In 2009, Katy Perry was nominated for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for “I Kissed a Girl;” she lost to Adele’s “Chasing Pavements.” ‘Chasing Pavements” would be the start of Adele’s prosperous songwriting and singing career. While “I Kissed a Girl” is a fun and catchy pop song, Adele’s number does retain a bit more vocal dexterity and you can feel her emotion dripping from the lyrics.

Katy Perry would go on to lose to Adele in 2012 and 2013. Both artist were nominated for Best Solo Pop Performance both years. Katy Perry was nominated for “Firework” and “Wide Awake.” Adele won for “Someone Like You” and “Set Fire to the Rain.”

For some reason, the voters really seem to favor Adele, as she also took home Grammys that many thought Beyonce deserved for “Lemonade.” Adele has received 15 Grammy Awards, yet has only released three major albums: 19, 21, and 25.

Katy Perry’s #2 competition: Lady Gaga

Katy Perry has lost twice to Lady Gaga, once in the Best Female Pop Vocal Performance Category and once in the Best Pop Vocal Album category. Perry was nominated for “Teenage Dream” – the album and song – and lost to Lady Gaga’s album The Fame Monster and her song “Bad Romance.” As for Lady Gaga, she will be a tough one to beat over the next few years; the now Oscar winner is one of the most talented contemporary songwriters and performers of the modern age.

Katy Perry has also lost to the likes of Lorde and Beyonce. When Katy Perry is nominated, she often goes up against the most critically renowned albums of the year. Katy’s talent is unmistakable; however, sometimes the competition just has her beat.

To be in the same category as these artists is an honor, and while Katy Perry can hold her own amongst them, her works tend to lean away from what would be considered optimal to a critic’s ear and in the direction of what her fans expect. This is by no means an issue, but it may be at the root of her downfall (to an extent).

Sometimes, it’s about luck

Though Katy Perry has had to face off against some very talented performers, arguing that the winners’ works were more “technically impressive” or more significant accomplishments is a foolish battle. While this may be true, who is to say?

While talented artists vote on the Grammys, in the end, the votes are still just opinions, and opinions are not foolproof. Katy Perry’s day will come, and when it does, fans everywhere will rejoice. Remember what happened when Leonard DiCaprio won Best Actor? A similar reaction is expected.
