‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ ‘Station 19’ Building Shared Universe With Weekly Crossovers
The worlds of “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Station 19” will collide much more frequently next season.
Last week, ABC renewed both series and announced that “Grey’s Anatomy” showrunner Krista Vernoff would oversee “Station 19,” as well.
The two Shondaland shows already share a lot of DNA — “Station 19” is a spinoff that also takes place in Seattle and stars Jason George, a cast member from the flagship. This season featured two major crossovers, which proved successful in the ratings. And ABC wants more of that.
“People can expect crossover event between these series every week,” said ABC Entertainment President Karey Burke on Tuesday at the network’s upfront presentation.Deadline reports the idea is to have “fluid” storylines with “characters seamlessly going back and fourth in what would feel like two-hour episodes.”
Vernoff and the writers will have time to map out this new crossover-heavy shared universe, since “Station 19” doesn’t return until midseason.
